SDP: Finalisation of EU entry talks important news for Croatia

ZAGREB, June 10 (Hina) - Please note that the last sentence in the news item headlined "SDP: Finalisation of EU entry talks important news for Croatia" should read correctly "When asked why SDP President Zoran Milanovic had not addressed the press on this historic day, the party's spokeswoman Ivana Grljak said that the party had a right to decide on its own who would present its views."

The following is the corrected version:

"The finalisation of negotiations between Croatia and the European Union is important news for Croatia, Social Democratic Party (SDP) vice-president Milanka Opacic said on Friday, expressing great pleasure on behalf of the strongest Opposition party at the news that the European Commission had earlier in the day recommended to the Council of the EU to close the four remaining chapters in the negotiations with Croatia.

The credit for this goes to all the citizens who have been waiting very patiently all these years for Croatia to meet the EU membership requirements, but also to all the governments, starting from the government of SDP Prime Minister Ivica Racan to the present government, and to all the parliaments which have done a huge job of legislative alignment, Opacic said at a press conference at the party's headquarters in Zagreb.

Today, when it's completely certain that Croatia will become the 28th member of the European Union, it's time we turned to the problems of Croatian citizens. That's why the SDP believes that parliamentary elections should be called as soon as possible, possibly by the end of September, because "citizens' problems can be dealt with only by those who win new legitimacy at elections," she said.

When asked why SDP President Zoran Milanovic had not addressed the press on this historic day, the party's spokeswoman Ivana Grljak said that the party had a right to decide on its own who would present its views."
