SARAJEVO, Feb 19 (Hina) - As a part of the marking of 550th anniversary of the birth of eminent humanist and Croatia and Latin poet Marko Marulic, the Croatian Culture Centre in Sarajevo will organise the presentation of the book of Marulic's collected poems on February 22.#L# The centre will also organise a panel on Marulic, called "Marko Marulic - Croatian Dante". The anniversary of the birth of Marko Marulic will be marked in the entire year 2000 under the auspices of the UNESCO by international scientific seminars, exhibitions, and other events. Marko Marulic, also called the father of Croatian literature, was born in the southern Adriatic city of Split on August 18, 1450, and died on January 5, 1524. He is the first well-known Croatian writer who wrote poetry in Croatian but scientific work in Latin, by which he gained fame across Europe. His philosophical and theological book entitled On the Institution of Good Living was published in fifteen editions and translated into Italian, French, Portuguese, German, and Czech. He was the first to use the word psychology in The Psychology of the Reason of the Human Soul. In 1501, Marulic wrote his most important Croatian work, the epic poem Judith, published in 1521, mostly with the idea of encouraging his countrymen in their struggle against the Turks and of giving them a message of hope that, with God's help, they would overcome all difficulties. Judith was written for those who did not know Latin. Their response was immediate: this first Croatian printed literary work enjoyed three editions within two years. (hina) it
