LJUBLJANA, Feb 7 (Hina) - Slovenia's President Milan Kucan conferred a high decoration of his country on Croatian scholar Predrag Matvejevic, aged 68, who is a professor at La Sapienza University in Rome, for his credits in
maintaining the Department of the Slovene Language and Literature at that Italian university. Matvejevic taught Slovene literature without a fee at the Department after it faced a possibility of being closed and in the meantime he managed to attract the quadrupled number of students compared to the attendance registered before he started giving lessons. Two years ago, Slovenia ensured sufficient funds for a new lecturer in its language and literature. On Monday, the Slovene ambassador plenipotentiary, Joze Susmelj presented Matvejevic with the Silver Honorary Sign of the Republic of Slovenia.(hina) ms
