Germany played a key role in helping Croatia gain international
recognition around the world by using its political and economic
weight to incite a passive Europe and the European Community's
other 11 states to recognise Croatia's independence and
sovereignty.
"After declaring its independence and sovereignty, and severing
its state and legal ties with the former Yugoslav federation, the
Republic of Croatia has now achieved the international recognition
of its independence," late Croatian President Franjo Tudjman then
told the nation in a television broadcast.
On 15 January 1992, Croatia was recognised by Belgium, Great
Britain, Denmark, Malta, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands,
Hungary, Norway, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy, Canada, Australia,
France, Finland, and Sweden.
Previous recognition was given by the Holy See, Germany, Island,
Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia, the Ukraine, and San
Marino.
