The government adopted the plans of construction and maintenance of highways, as well as state roads in 2002. HAC director presented an overview of financing the construction of the highways, calculated in euro, since a large part of the funds will have to be acquired from loans. In the next four years, 2.86 billion euro will be needed. Of the amount, HAC will use 11.1 billion euro from its own budget (from road tolls and oil products fees), while 1.75 billion euro will have to be borrowed. Public Works Minister Radimir Cacic stressed that the new model of
financing road construction, in which the state assumes
responsibility, while companies are obliged to respect deadlines,
prices and quality.
Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic stressed the importance of road
connecting Croatia with Europe, the construction and developing
border crossings, and recommended that an analysis be done on the
justification of the introduction of vignettes as a form of road
toll, on the model of Austria.
Prime Minister Ivica Racan stressed that the government paid great
attention to the construction of roads because this ambitious
programme creates jobs for domestic construction companies.
He announced that the government would, at the beginning of next
year, be submitted a report on the realisation of the government's
decision on the accelerated construction of the Zagreb-Split
highway.
