recalled that Sunday, November 18, will mark the tenth anniversary
of the tragedy of Vukovar, and on behalf of the government, called

Vukovar remains permanently in our conscience as a symbol of
suffering and resistance, Racan said at Thursday's government
session, calling on government members to pay their respect to all
soldiers and civilians who were killed in defending this eastern
Croatian town from Serb aggression.
In autumn 1991, the surrounded Vukovar resisted an enormous
military force for almost three whole months, he recalled.
Modestly armed defenders, most without military experience, but
with great hearts and courage, resisted the numerous and well-armed
enemy. The residents and defenders of the town lived in the hell of
hundreds of thousands bombs for three months, he said.
It is with sadness and respect that we today remember the suffering
of Vukovar. The tragic stories of those who survived will forever be
testimony to the heroism and suffering of those who stayed in the
town. On November 18, 1991, the aggressor army entered the
devastated and bloody town, Racan said.
