LJUBLJANA, Nov 12 (Hina) - NATO Secretary-General George Robertson
has called on all sides in Macedonia to maximum restraint following
Sunday's grave incident between the Macedonian army and Albanian
guerrillas.
Talking to reporters in Slovenia's Brdo kod Kranja after discussing
NATO expansion with Slovene Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek on
Monday, Robertson said he had talked with Macedonian President
Boris Trajkovski and the general heading international
peacekeepers there after the situation calmed down earlier today.
The prospects of Macedonia's new Constitution being finalised this
week are big, Robertson said.
In talks with Slovenia's political leadership, the secretary-
general said the decision on which countries would be invited to
join NATO had not been made yet and depended on the progress the
candidates made in implementing the third stage of the Membership
Action Plan.
Slovenia has made big progress in reforms but must keep it up,
particularly with regard to the readiness of its armed force, said
Robertson.
He commended PM Drnovsek and his government's intentions to step up
Slovenia's participation in NATO's peacekeepers in Bosnia, the
Stabilisation Force. Slovenia is a successful stabilising factor
in Southeast Europe, Robertson said.
The terrorist attacks in the United States will not stop the NATO
expansion process, he added.
