ZAGREB, Nov 10 (Hina) - The first Croatian review of
ecoagriculture, which features around 100 manufacturers of
ecological farm produce, was opened under the motto "Croatia is
Rich" in Zagreb on Saturday.
The two-day event is held under the auspices of President Stipe
Mesic, and was opened by Assistant Environmental Protection and
Zoning Minister Hrvoje Glavac, who said ecoagriculture and
ecotourism were Croatia's chances for development.
The aim of the review is to promote ecologically acceptable
manufacturing, ensure the placement of such products on the market,
and link ecoagriculture and ecotourism.
This year Croatia adopted an ecoagriculture law which, according to
sociologist Vladimir Lay, is a condition for further development.
Croatia is at the very beginnings of ecoagriculture and at the very
end in such production in Europe. Only 12.5 hectares of 3.2 million
of Croatian farmland is used for ecoagriculture by 16 private farms
which have an international certificate. Their production is in
keeping with European Union legislation, which enables them to
place their products on the EU market.
In comparison, Slovenia, which is considerably smaller than
Croatia, has 600 ecomanufacturers and 10,000 hectares of land for
ecoproduction.
Croatia has yet to pass regulations and ensure the state's
financial support to ecoproduction, it was said at a round table.
The participants signed a petition against the production of
genetically modified food which they will forward to parliamentary
speaker Zlatko Tomcic.
