SMUGGLERS OF 557KG OF COCAINE CONVICTED

RIJEKA, Oct 29 (Hina) - The Rijeka County Court on Monday issued sentences to three indictees who smuggled 557 kilograms of cocaine in 1997 into Croatia. Slobodan Kasic and Mladen Pervan were sentenced in absentia to 13 and 11 years in prison, respectively, and Tomislav Banovic to a year and a half in prison. The cocaine, worth 56 million German marks, were discovered at a container terminal in Rijeka harbour. The drugs were transported from Equador and was intended for the European, and part of it for the Croatian market. Kasic, 58, from Split, was convicted in absentia. He used to be a famous waterpolo player who has been living in South America for a number of years. Pervan, 37, from Zagreb is on the run.
