ZAGREB, Sept 26 (Hina) - The problem of redundancies in the Croatian
defence ministry will gradually be solved in the coming five to ten
years, the state and public servants union has reported.
The union on Wednesday met the Defence Minister's assistant in
charge of staff and human resources, Lieutenant General Marijan
Marekovic, to discuss this problem which will crop up during the re-
organisation of the ministry.
The government's aim is to cut the number of employees of the
ministry from the current 42,000 to 25,000 in the coming five to ten
years. Of the current 9,000 office employees and servants, 3,000
will remain employed in this ministry.
The meeting with Lt. Gen. Marekovic was convened as to avoid abrupt
layoffs like in the interior ministry which stirred up protests of
its workers, said a union leader, Nina Milicevic.
Therefore the layoffs will be made gradually, and the union will
draw up a programme for re-employment of redundant workers,
Milicevic said.
The issue will be settled through the re-training of surplus
workers for new jobs, the natural outflow of employees and
retirement.
