Excavations in the area began in 1999, when researchers discovered
a cemetery dating back to the fourth century AD. Twenty graves were
discovered at the time, including 18 ossuaries and two walled tombs
believed to have been robbed as they contained only bones.
During the 1999 excavations, researchers also discovered a series
of objects, including coins from the year 350, the time of emperor
Flavius Magnus Magnentius, tableware and jewellery, which included
a rare European find, a gold-plated bronze fibula.
The research has been organised by the Djakovo Museum and the
archaeology department at the Croatian Academy of Arts and
Sciences.
