DEMOGRAPHERS WARN OF BAD DEMOGRAPHIC IMAGE OF CROATIA

ZAGREB, Sept 13 (Hina) - Croatia is seeing a demographic crash. Never has such a low number of children been born as last year (only 43,746), ten children per 1,000 citizens, demographer Jakov Gelo told a news conference organised by the HDZ's (Croatian Democratic Union) women's society "Katarina Zrinska" on the occasion of the start of the autumn session of the Croatian Parliament, which will be discussing a decrease in childbirth allowances and shortened maternity leave. The society's chairwoman, Jadranka Kosor, called on members of parliament to demonstrate solidarity and reach consensus on the fact that the state economising by shortening maternity leave and cutting childbirth and child allowances is not real economising. A hundred years ago this ratio in Croatia was six children to one mother. The participants called on the government authorities, particularly MPs, to advocate a positive social climate and laws which will stimulate an increase in childbirths. (hina) lml sb
