This is the first operation of this kind ever performed on a ten-month-old child in Croatia. Even though the liver transplant was to be performed by a team of experts from the United States, who were scheduled to arrive in Zagreb in September, the operation had to be performed immediately, because the patient's condition was critical. Liver transplants are very rarely performed on babies and doctors usually wait until the child is three years old. The donor was the baby's father.
