ZAGREB, Sept 6 (Hina) - All Croatian prime ministers, past and
present, gathered at villa Weiss in Zagreb on Thursday evening at an
initiative of former PM Josip Manolic to exchange views on ways of
solving the current problems of the Croatian state and society.
Talking to reporters before the meeting, former PM and incumbent
President Stipe Mesic said they had gathered on the occasion of the
tenth anniversary of the creation of independent Croatia.
The initiator of the meeting, Manolic, said Croatia's past six
governments "had huge problems which had to be solved. Based on that
experience we thought the incumbent government might use that
experience, not in a negative but positive sense in order to
overcome the current difficulties and lead Croatia out of the
crisis. That was approximately our goal."
Manolic said the meeting was not directed against anybody but
towards the future and the mobilisation of everything that was
willing to tackle Croatia's crisis. "There are problems on the
international level and internal ones, especially big economic and
social ones, but they are not only this government's (problems) but
of all of our (past) governments," he said.
"I think it is all right for us to meet like this... unofficially,
for talks, without making any historic decisions," said incumbent
PM Ivica Racan. He added some of the problems of the incumbent
government were similar to those encountered by past ones. "We
shall probably talk about that. I will be smarter after the talks,"
he said.
Other former PMs at the meeting include Franjo Greguric, Hrvoje
Sarinic, Nikica Valentic, and Zlatko Matesa.
