OSIJEK OSIJEK, Sept 4 (Hina) - The trial to 58 Serbs from the eastern region of Baranja, accused of war crimes, started at the County court in Osijek Tuesday. Six of the accused were present at the arraignment, while the other 52, who
are hiding in Yugoslavia and other countries, are being tried in absentia. All 58 indictees are being tried for acting against the Croatian Constitution during the 1991-1995 Homeland Defence War, when they took up arms and forcibly removed the Croatian and Hungarian population from Baranja villages in order to establish a paramilitary Serb government. Their defence attorneys have asked the court to allow the accused to defend themselves in freedom, as well as for separate trials for those who are being tried in absentia. The court will reach the decision by tomorrow.(hina) js
