Belgrade press reports on pope's mass in Zagreb and visit to Stepinac's tomb

BELGRADE, June 6 (Hina) - The Belgrade press on Monday reported about Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Croatia on 4-5 June and on his messages he gave at an open-air mass at the Zagreb Hippodrome racecourse on Sunday and his statement during his visit to the Zagreb Cathedral and the tomb of Blessed Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac.

Danas said that some 300,000 believers attended the mass which the pontiff conducted on the occasion of the First National Day of Catholic Families.

Although it was raining in the night between Saturday and Sunday, pilgrims from throughout Croatia and neighbouring countries started arriving at the Hippodrome during the night, Danas wrote, adding that the pope had come to the venue aboard his popemobile amid tight security.

Blic said that Benedict XVI criticised secularisation in European countries with the promotion of freedom without responsibility.

The Pope highlighted the importance of family life and the sanctity of life from conception until natural death, and called upon the faithful not to give in to "that secularised mentality", Blic said.

Politika said that this was the fourth pontifical journey, recalling that Joseph Ratzinger's predecessor, John Paul II, had visited Croatia three times.

Pope Benedict's visit to Zagreb passed without problem, Political said, citing two minor rallies at which demonstrators protested against the Pontiff's arrival.

Vecernje Novosti said that the Holy Father visited the tomb of Blessed Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac in the Zagreb Cathedral and that he described him as a humanist and a protector of Serbs, Jews and Roma during the Second World War.

Press said that the Serb community in Croatia was outraged by the Pope's portrayal of Blessed Cardinal Stepinac as a protector of Serbs, Jews and Roma in the Nazi-style Independent State of Croatia during World War II.
