ZAGREB, Aug 7 (Hina) - The strongest opposition party has requested
an emergency parliamentary session to address the latest
government decisions on higher prices and police layoffs and
announcements of layoffs in the military.
These decisions will have an adverse effect on the citizens'
standard, the stability of the Croatian society and security of the
state, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said in a statement on
Tuesday.
With the latest steps, the government has undermined its chances of
survival, losing the support of every social strata, the HDZ
maintains. By laying off people at the armed and police forces, the
government wants to change their structure, bringing people who
will unquestioningly execute the regime's orders.
According to the HDZ, the economic policy cannot be compensated
through continuous layoffs, by reducing the rights of war victims,
drastically cutting maternity compensation, introducing taxes on
pensions, and reducing social benefits and wages.
The crisis in Croatia is reaching its pinnacle and might result in
consequences dangerous to the survival of the state, the HDZ said.
According to the statement, it is time the "unsuccessful (ruling)
coalition... admitted its incompetence" or it will have to bear the
historic and personal responsibility for the possible occurrence
of unpredictable and ultimately dramatic events.
