WASHINGTON, July 26 (Hina) - Croatian General Ante Gotovina's
attorney declined to say on Thursday what his client would do after
the Hague war-crimes tribunal earlier today disclosed that he was
indicted for crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and
customs of war against Croatian Serbs during 1995's Operation
Storm.
Chicago-based attorney Luka Misetic told Hina he could not say at
this moment if the retired general intended to surrender to
Croatian authorities or the Hague tribunal.
He said it would be proved that in Operation Storm General Gotovina
brought peace to the region, with United States' support.
Misetic claims Storm was a joint Croatian-U.S. military operation
which ended the wars in Croatia and Bosnia, and that the U.S. had
complete operative control over that liberation operation. The
charges against Gotovina are not just an indictment against him but
an attack on the U.S. as well, said the attorney.
He finds it unacceptable that the Hague tribunal should describe
the operation which led to the downfall of former Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic and established peace in the region as
planned ethnic cleansing.
Misetic's law firm Pedersen and Haupt said that it represented
General Gotovina two weeks ago, pointing out that no war crimes or
other violations of international humanitarian law were committed
under Gotovina's command.
The Hague tribunal disclosed the Gotovina indictment earlier
today. He is charged on both personal and commanding
responsibility.
