Council on Wednesday adopted a monetary policy projection for this
year's third trimester and the Money Transfer Service's annual
account for 2000, the central bank said in a statement.
The Governing Council is familiar with the measures the HNB has
undertaken this month to halt this year's pronounced appreciation
of the domestic currency, the kuna, in relation to the euro, and
with these measures' results.
The appreciation of the kuna was halted after the HNB in mid-July
purchased EUR245 million from business banks and the state,
resulting in a mild, 0.24-percent depreciation of the exchange
rate.
HNB analysts have pointed to the pronounced differences recorded
recently between the HNB central rate and the inter-bank rate. They
say this is due to the fact that the central bank calculates its
exchange rate on the rate supplied by business banks. The latter has
recently been considerably affected by the purchase of hefty sums
of cash from individuals, primarily tourists.
