At the base Bush had talks with the United Nations civil
administrator in Kosovo, Hans Haekkerup, the commander of the
peace-keeping Kosovo Force (KFOR), Thorstein Skiarek, the head of
the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe Mission to
Kosovo, Daan Everston, and other senior KFOR and UN Mission in
Kosovo officials.
The U.S President said there was now less arms and violence in
Kosovo. He added elections would be held in November to provide the
basis for democratic authorities. Bush said, however, there was
still a lot to do in Kosovo in order to stop violence and intolerance
and prevent organised crime and the smuggling of weapons.
Bush said the U.S. was interested in preserving peace and stability
in Southeast Europe, and added U.S. troops would remain in Kosovo as
long as it was necessary.
