ZAGREB, July 12 (Hina) - "The latest manipulation with indictments
filed against individuals, even if they include some HV (Croatian
Army) generals, is not aimed at defending them but setting a
political scenario of chaos and deluding the Croatian public," the
Defenders of Croatia association said in a statement on Thursday.
The association believes that the architects of road blockades in
the peak of the tourist season have found a stronghold in some war
veterans' associations and so-called crisis centres.
"Protests against the (UN's war crimes) Tribunal in The Hague have
turned into support to those who have humiliated Croatia's veterans
and pillaged the Croatian economy and are (now) obstructing the
functioning of... the authorities," read the statement.
The association reproached the incumbent government for being slow
and lacking determination in implementing the changes which helped
it win the January 2000 elections, and for leaving room for
frustrated individuals, so-called headquarters and specific
veterans' associations to make attempts to topple the
democratically elected authorities.
This makes the government hostage to its own policy, concluded the
statement which was signed by the association's president, reserve
brigadier Damir Curik.
