LONDON/ZAGREB, June 10 (Hina) - The Croatian Social Liberal Party's
(HSLS) attitude on cooperation between Croatia and the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
could cause the party's exclusion from the Liberal International
(LI).

International secretary of the Northern Ireland's Liberals
Nicholas Whyte on Monday called upon the HSLS leadership to decide
whether it was serious about its membership in international
associations of liberal parties considering it was difficult to
understand how can one relate this membership to the standpoint the
HSLS had adopted regarding cooperation with between Croatia and the
U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
LI Secretary General Jan Weijers on Tuesday confirmed he had
received the request of the northern Irish liberals. Commenting on
differences between the HSLS and other Croatian government
coalition partners regarding the cooperation with the ICTY,
Weijers said the Liberal International strongly supported
cooperation between Croatia and the Hague tribunal.
The Liberal International is a global federation of liberal parties
advocating democracy, the respect of human rights, social justice,
tolerance, equality, market economy, free trade and international
solidarity.
The HSLS was admitted to the Liberal International in 1992 as a full
member. Croatia's Liberal Party (LS) is also a Liberal
International member. The HSLS is also a European Liberal Democrat
and Reform Party (ELDR) associated member.
Northern Ireland's Alliance Party won 6.5 percent of the vote at the
last elections for the Northern Ireland's Assembly. This is a
liberal party which opposes the standpoints of Northern Ireland's
Unionist and Nationalist political parties and is one of the
strongest political forces in the country, equally supported by
northern Irish Catholics and Protestants.
The party had joined the Liberal International and the ELDR as a
full member.
