ZAGREB, July 4 (Hina) - Currently 4.8 square kilometres on 45 locations in Croatia are being cleared of mines, while two major projects have just been completed, demining 506 square kilometres of land. Said data was presented in
Zagreb on Tuesday at a session of the Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR) Council, which also debated the drafting of a humanitarian demining law. The HCR said in a statement on Wednesday between 1-1.2 million mines were left in Croatia after the 1990s war, mostly along the former demarcation line. About 4,000 square kilometres of land are suspected of being mine-infested, while 400 square kilometres are known to be. There have been 1,700 mine casualties since 1991. All mines should be removed by 2010 thanks to a series of major projects, according to the HCR.(hina) ha sb
