In view of protecting customers, the ministry's veterinary
department has launched over the last six months a systematic
control of fish and other Adriatic Sea organisms.
Testing began after articles in some foreign publications
speculated about the possible radionuclide contamination of fish
in the Adriatic from NATO aircraft missiles which were dropped in
the sea during raids in Yugoslavia in 1999. These articles were in
part reported by some domestic media as well.
Testing for radionuclide will resume over the next six months.
Alongside regular monitoring for the presence of hazardous matter,
this testing will ensure the maximum protection of domestic
customers and tourists.
