SARAJEVO, June 27 (Hina) - The executive authority in Bosnia's
Croat-Muslim federation has succeeded in averting attempts aimed
at establishing Croat self-rule, the entity's President Karlo
Filipovic said on Wednesday. He added the situation in the entity
was stable despite many political and economic difficulties.
Outling the results of the federal government's work in its first
100 days in office at a news conference in Sarajevo, Filipovic said
lawful authorities had and were successfully implementing an
integral plan for providing lasting political stability.
"Even the staunchest advocates of Croat self-rule realise now that
the attempt has failed and that any project intended to divide
(Bosnia-Herzegovina) does not stand a chance," said Filipovic.
He added the federal government had managed to consolidate the
situation in the entity's armed forces and prevent attempts to
establish illegal parallel police structures which would be
controlled by Bosnia's Croatian Democratic Union party.
The federation's Prime Minister, Alija Behmen, singled out as
especially successful the elimination of double systems in the
functioning of state administration which divided the federation
on ethnic grounds.
Behmen reminded his government had been appointed at a very
difficult moment, inheriting from the former government over
DEM1.5 million in debt. Commitments are being met despite an
absence of financial and other assistance promised by the
international community.
The overall economic situation in the entity continues to be very
unfavourable, with a 40-percent unemployment rate, two thirds of
the population living on the verge of poverty, and about 60 percent
of the young willing to leave the country which they see as offering
no prospects at all.
