ZAGREB, June 11 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's committee for petitions and complaints received 1,087 written petitions last year. Its members held talks with 1,520 citizens on a wide range of issues, from those concerning housing

ZAGREB, June 11 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's committee for
petitions and complaints received 1,087 written petitions last
year. Its members held talks with 1,520 citizens on a wide range of
issues, from those concerning housing and utilities, displaced
persons and refugees, to complaints about the slowness of the
judiciary.
Citizens mostly contacted the committee in connection with
difficulties in the implementation of a refugee and displaced
person return programme, laws on ownership, flat-renting, and
compensation for property seized during the pre-1990 communist
rule, and problems in pension regulations, the committee said in a
report on last year's activity.
Due to the long duration of court proceedings and the increasingly
deteriorating financial situation, many citizens refer to the
committee instead of courts for assistance and legal protection.
To that end, the committee has proposed establishing charge-free
legal assistance services in major county centres.
