Independent Union of Secondary School Teachers organised a day-
long strike of secondary school teachers accusing the Education and
Sports Ministry of cancelling talks on a new collective agreement
for secondary schools.
The Union's president Andrija Puljevic said teachers in 90 percent
of schools are expected to participate in the strike, their main
demand being an immediate start of talks.
The talks fell through when Deputy Minister Ivan Vavra refused to
start talks only with the Independent Union of Secondary School
Teachers, the largest union of secondary school teachers, after two
smaller unions requested to join the negotiations.
The Ministry yesterday issued a statement describing the strike as
"unnecessary, damaging and unfounded."
The Ministry stressed that it had not unilaterally cancelled the
already agreed talks as the postponement of implementation of one
provision from the agreement until the resolution of the dispute
did not mean the Ministry did not accept the agreement.
