RIJEKA, May 7 (Hina) - The president of the opposition's Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) party has called on Croatians to turn up en
masse at upcoming local elections but not to vote for the ruling
coalition's six parties unless they wanted a copy of the state
authority, ineffective and repressive towards those thinking
differently.
The government has failed to keep even one of the promises it made
before elections, Ivo Sanader said in the northern Adriatic city of
Rijeka on Monday.
He added that instead of providing new jobs, the governing
structure had closed many, was socially insensitive, and had failed
to get from international sources any more money than the previous
HDZ-led government.
Owing to the disoriented government's poor performance, the
Croatian population lives markedly worse than before, Sanader
asserted, adding the HDZ was offering a serious alternative.
Asked about events surrounding President Stipe Mesic's visit to the
southern Adriatic city of Split last weekend, Sanader said the HDZ
objected the insulting of state institutions, which include the
President of the Republic. He added, however, that it was entirely
unacceptable for the President to insult citizens.
