ZAGREB, May 4 (Hina) - Croatia received with great astonishment the news of the light sentences an Indonesian court passed against defendants tried for last year's killing of three UNHCR members, including one Croat, in west Timor,
the Croatian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. Croatia joins the unanimous condemnation by the international community of the inappropriately light sentences against the perpetrators of one of the most serious attacks on United Nations civil personnel, the statement added. The light sentences, ranging from ten to 24 months, for crimes which under the law should be punished with up to 34 years in prison, show a complete lack of respect for the innocent victims and will have an adverse effect on the work of international humanitarian organisations and intensify the refugee crisis in West Timor, the statement read.
