WASHINGTON, April 12 (Hina) - The US Congress Library European
department and the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU)
organised a seminar on the life and work of Marko Marulic, the
father of Croatian literature, in Washington on Wednesday.
The event, held on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of
Marulic's most famous work, the epic "Judith", gathered experts
from the United States, Croatia, France, Canada and Hungary.
An exhibition of Marulic's original manuscripts dating back to the
16th century was staged in the Congress Library.
Participants in the seminar were welcomed by the head of the
European department, John Van Oudenaren, HAZU vice-president Milan
Mogus, and Croatia's Ambassador to the USA Ivan Grdesic.
More than a year ago, the magazine 'Most' printed a translation of
300 verses from Marulic's epic "Judith", translated by Graham
McMaster.
Linguists claim the translator has managed to make an exceptional
English equivalent of Marulic's double-rhymed twelve-syllable
verse and convey the underlying rhythm of the epic.
On Wednesday evening, Ambassador Grdesic handed to Congress
Library representatives a gift - new editions of Marulic's
collected work reprints. The ceremony took place in a memorial
building named after the fourth US President James Madison.
