ZAGREB, April 4 (Hina) - Croatia's Interior Minister Sime Lucin and
Sweden's Ambassador Ingemar Boerjessen signed in Zagreb on
Wednesday an agreement on readmission, which regulates the problem
of illegal migrations between the two countries.
The agreement is an important step on Croatia's path toward
European integration and in the resolution of the problem of
illegal migrations, Lucin and Boerjesson told a news conference
after they signed the agreement.
"This agreement is one of 19 readmission agreements Croatia has
signed, I hope there will be more such agreements and that they will
be not only a step forward in resolving the problem of illegal
emigrants but a step forward in the process of Croatia's admission
to the EU," Lucin said.
According to Lucin, the agreement shows the EU has realised that the
problem of illegal migrations cannot only include EU's border areas
but also the countries which are the final destination of illegal
emigrants.
The interior minister said there were indications that this year
Croatia would be much more efficient in preventing illegal
migrations.
"We have set two goals for next year... the establishment of a more
comprehensive and systematic border control system toward Bosnia-
Herzegovina and the signing of a readmission agreement with
Yugoslavia," Lucin said.
The Swedish diplomat expressed satisfaction with the agreement
assessing that Croatia was demonstrating decisiveness on its path
toward European associations. This is a small but a very important
step for Croatia and Sweden in that direction, he said.
After the signing ceremony, Lucin introduced to reporters the
Ministry's new spokeswoman Zinka Bardic, a long-time reporter and
editor-in-chief of Zagreb's Radio 101.
Lucin said that changes in the ministry's public relations office
were part of a process of reorganisation of the ministry, which
should be completed in a couple of months.
The former ministry spokesman Slavko Rako has been transferred to
the Police Directorate's head office but he has not been given new
duties since the office is only being organised, Lucin said.
