ZAGREB, March 29 (Hina) - A committee in charge of organising the
tenth anniversary of the police operation "Plitvice 91", appointed
by Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and chaired by Interior
Minister Sime Lucin, on Thursday adopted a programme for marking
the anniversary at the Plitvice Lakes, the Interior Ministry said
in a statement today.
Josip Jovic, the first Croatian police officer to be killed in the
Homeland War, was killed during the Plitvice operation, which saw a
clash between members of the Anti-terrorist unit Lucko and Serb
paramilitary units at the Plitvice Lakes on Easter 1991.
The three-day anniversary-marking programme starts with a round
table discussion on the operation at the Plitvice Lakes on Friday,
March 30.
The gathering will be addressed by President Stjepan Mesic,
Interior and Defence Ministers Sime Lucin and Jozo Rados
respectively and Lieutenant General Josip Lucic and Lika-Senj
County prefect Ante Frkovic.
The association "Uzdanica 90", which gathers members of the anti-
terrorist unit Lucko, today announced that it would organise a
separate ceremony marking the anniversary of the Plitvice
operation, saying the state committee for marking the anniversary
included persons who at the time wore JNA uniforms, like Generals
Imra Agotic and Petar Stipetic.
The 'parallel' ceremony is a continuation of a meeting of support
for General Mirko Norac, held a month and a half ago in Split, the
Uzdanica 90 association reported, adding the meeting would be
attended by numerous soldiers, the replaced Croat member of the
Bosnia-Herzegovina state presidency, Ante Jelavic, and retired
Croatian army generals.
Judging by the list of participants, the meeting will gather
opponents of the current authorities, who claim that they are
protecting the dignity of the Homeland War and Croatian national
interests and are demanding the replacement of senior state
officials. General Norac is a war crimes suspect and is in custody
at the Rijeka County prison.
