ZAGREB, March 22 (Hina) - The Office of Croatian President Stjepan
Mesic on Thursday issued a statement reading that at no moment any
possibility of "classic mediation" by the Croatian President in the
Macedonian crisis was considered. However, one has considered the
possibility for a mission of good will which will forward "a clear
message that problems cannot be solved by force but through
institutions of the system," read the statement. #L#
President Mesic has accepted in principle the idea of his possible
role in bids to stop the conflict in Macedonia.
At the same time he 'probed' into the "the mood of the European Union
and some key countries of the international community, namely the
region," the statement read.
"The possibility of classic mediation has never been considered,
but in accordance with ... full support to the maintenance of the
sovereignty and territorial integrity of Macedonia, there have
been considerations (...) about a form of a mission of good will
which will be expressed through the clearly formulated message that
problems cannot be solved by force and their resolution can and must
be sought exclusively in the institutions of the system," it
added.
"President Mesic fully shares and supports the standpoints of key
factors of the international community that the only right and
acceptable solutions are those which satisfy both sides and which
are in the function of respect for the legitimate rights of a
minority and majority and the realisation of multi-ethnic society
in all fields of the public life. In this context, one should take
into consideration that under pressure, particularly under the
threat of armed conflict, no negotiations can be held, neither can
such solutions be found, but they (solutions) can be achieved only
through dialogue conducted within constitutional frameworks," the
statement read.
President Mesic condemns all attempts aimed at destabilising
Macedonia and the region, and expresses hope and confidence that
Skopje, with the active support of the international community,
including KFOR (international peace-keepers in Kosovo), would
manage to overcome the current crisis.
