EXPERTS CONFIRM CARCASS NEAR S. ISLAND IS MEDITERRANEAN MONK SEAL

KORCULA, March 15 (Hina) - Experts from the Oceanography and Fishing Institute from Dubrovnik established on Thursday the carcass found on the east coast of the southern Adriatic island of Korcula was a Mediterranean monk seal, a mammal which was believed not to be living in this part of the Adriatic. An autopsy showed the mammal was alive a month ago, while an inspection of the area showed the carcass was not thrown onto the coast by the sea, but that the seal, while still alive, got stuck in a sea rock cleft. The Mediterranean monk seal was last seen in the Adriatic more than 15 years ago. A protected species which can grow to 3.5 metres and weigh up to 350kg, it lives in pairs, so experts assume the companion is still alive. Further check-ups will show the sex of the dead animal.(hina) ha
