NEW YORK, March 13 (Hina) - UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura on Tuesday welcomed a decision of the Hague war crimes tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to issue indictments against five persons responsible for the
destruction of Dubrovnik. In a special statement, issued in New York and Paris, Matsuura said attacks on Dubrovnik, a city of world historical heritage, deserved punishment as crimes against humanity and war crimes. The barbarity of those attacks can be compared only to the barbarity of the Taleban destroying the ancient Buddha statues in Afghanistan, the statement said. The ICTY prosecution on February 22 issued indictments against the perpetrators (who have not been named yet) of 1991 attacks on the southern Croatian city.(hina) rml
