ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan expects an investment cycle worth almost 11.5 billion kuna will provide conditions for companies, especially those from the construction industry, to expand their business,

ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan
expects an investment cycle worth almost 11.5 billion kuna will
provide conditions for companies, especially those from the
construction industry, to expand their business, as well as for the
creation of new jobs.
One of the areas which will see such processes is the construction
of roads, Racan told a regular news conference, adding that
simultaneously with the construction of a highway running toward
the central Adriatic city of Split, to be completed by the tourist
season 2003, attempts would be made to 'iron' the existing road via
Plitvice by building by-pass roads and third lanes on uphill
roads.
The premier reiterated the government had not announced a ten
percent cut in the salaries of those employed in state and public
services but a ten percent cut in the entire wage budget.
This measure is aimed at making economies in many segments of the
state administration and companies, proving that one can
efficiently put an end to the earning of various forms of additional
income beside salaries, and reduce the number of employees, given
that in the state administration "things were dealt with in a
disorganised manner, due to lack of desirable quality, and for the
sake of quantity."
The goal of this government is to contribute to the establishment of
a state administration which will be smaller but better, more in the
service of citizens, Racan said.
Despite the fact that it 'squanders' time on different cases, the
government does not forget its main duty - dragging the country out
of the economic crisis, reducing unemployment and bringing the
country closer to the European Union, he said.
Speaking about the topical problem of foot-and-mouth disease in
Europe, Racan said measures had been taken to prevent the possible
bringing of the disease in Croatia and all imports and transport of
live animals through Croatia had been banned through March 16.
Racan sees the new situation as an opportunity for the domestic
production, helped by additional measures, to be stimulated to
satisfy the entire market, including tourist needs. There is no
reason why our tourist offer, along with the healthy environment,
could not be based on healthy and safe food, he said.
