PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK EXPECTS 550,000 VISITORS THIS YEAR PLITVICE LAKES, March 4 (Hina) - The tourist sector of the Plitvice Lakes National Park expects 550,000 visitors this year, against 482,275 in 2000, which was an 86
percent increase over 1999. The management of the park, which is famous for its 16 lakes connected by waterfalls, expects primarily foreign tourists who they hope might account for 85 percent of the entire figure. The highest number of tourists is expected from Germany, Italy, and Austria, but the management also hopes for visitors from the Netherlands and Great Britain, which they call "sleeping" markets. Data on overnights, however, are not as promising as for one-day sightseeing. Last year, three local hotels registered an occupancy rate of a mere 30 percent, with a total 147,113 overnights. This year the park's management hopes to surpass 160,000 overnights due to announced arrivals from Japan and the United State
