Thursday he did not know why retired general Mirko Norac had not
shown up at the President's Office yesterday even though Mesic had
been expecting him. Mesic said he expected Norac to show up today.
"Some issues have evidently yet to be resolved, but I think
everything has been settled," the President said.
He confirmed he was in touch with the general, a suspect in war
crimes against civilians committed in 1991, through a mediator, but
declined to disclose who it was.
Mesic refuted that he had negotiated the conditions of Norac's
surrender with Prime Minister Ivica Racan. He said it had been
agreed it was all right that Norac talk with him as the president of
state. "He is a retired general and it is normal that he talk with
me, that as a soldier he request a certain treatment and not be taken
in by the police," said Mesic.
Norac's whereabouts are unknown. A warrant for his arrest was
issued last week.
Mesic had announced on Tuesday that Norac had requested report with
him for Wednesday.
