ZAGREB, Feb 2 (Hina) - Many Croatian political parties and other
associations on Friday strongly condemned Thursday's act of
vandalism when a monument to victims of fascism in Zagreb's main
cemetery was badly damaged in the blast of an explosive device,
planted under the monument.
The Democratic Centre (DC) issued a statement describing
yesterday's terrorist act as a direct attack against democracy and
anti-fascism on which the present-day Croatian state is based under
the Constitution.
The Action of Social Democrats of Croatia (ASH) viewed this
barbarous act as an assault against Croatia's freedom and democracy
which hampers its bids to enter European integration processes.
The Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HKDU) regarded Thursday's
planting of the mine under the Second World War national heroes'
grave as a criminal act with which "somebody would like to push
Croatia into the peril of despondency and chaos of the Balkans."
The Association of WWII Anti-fascist Fighters of Croatia (SABH)
described this act as the political diversion carried out by
Croatian extremists who could not accept Croatia's democratic
transformation. SABH added that in the last ten years almost 3,000
monuments to the Croatian anti-fascist movement and its fighters
had been demolished in the country.
Deploring the act, the Serb National Council (SNV) said it was
doubtless that the attack "was carried out by the followers of the
still undefeated Ustashi and fascist ideology and practice."
The Socialist Worker Party (SRP) regarded the blast as "yet another
terrorist act carried out by the Ustashi gang against objects of the
anti-fascist heritage." The SRP urged the incumbent authorities to
start decisively fighting against extremism "which comes
exclusively from the right."
All parties asked competent bodies to conduct a speedy
investigation and take perpetrators before justice, as Croatia's
credibility in the international community depended on that.
