The government stresses that Ortynski has demonstrated great
professional qualities, competence and diligence as well as
extreme tenacity and courage in some of the most complex and risky
cases.
Ortynski has earned a great reputation not only in professional
circles but in the public, as an unyielding fighter for justice,
Justice Minister Stjepan Ivanisevic said.
Prime Minister Ivica Racan said the ruling six-party coalition
supported Ortynski's appointment.
According to the Constitution, the State Prosecutor is appointed
for a term of four years by the House of Representatives at the
Government's proposal and with the consent of a competent
parliamentary committee.
Radovan Ortynski was born in Zagreb in 1951. He graduated from the
Zagreb Faculty of Law, has worked more than 20 years as a judge,
mostly at Zagreb's District, and later, County Court.
Ortynski meets all conditions for appointment as envisaged by the
existing laws on the State Prosecutor's Office, Ivanisevic said.
The minister informed government members that the text of a new bill
on the State Prosecutor's Office was finished and that it would pass
regular parliamentary procedure, namely two readings, and could
therefore not be adopted before late April.
The appointment of Radovan Ortynski as State Prosecutor will fill
the post of the leading person in the state prosecution after a gap
of nearly six months. Namely, after Berislav Zivkovic was relieved
of duties as State Prosecutor at his own request on August 1 last
year, the post has been temporarily held by Deputy State Prosecutor
Slavko Zadnik.
