ZAGREB, Jan 30 (Hina) - Efraim Zuroff, the director of the Jerusalem-based "Simon Wiesenthal" centre, said the Office of the President of the Republic would harmonise with Croatian institutions activities relating to the organisation
of a travelling exhibition on the Holocaust, entitled "Courage To Remember." ZAGREB, Jan 30 (Hina) - Efraim Zuroff, the director of the
Jerusalem-based "Simon Wiesenthal" centre, said the Office of the
President of the Republic would harmonise with Croatian
institutions activities relating to the organisation of a
travelling exhibition on the Holocaust, entitled "Courage To
Remember."
Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic received Zuroff in mid-January
and on that occasion agreed to sponsor the educational display,
which will be held throughout Croatia this year.
The purpose of the event is to preserve the memory of the Holocaust
and encourage tolerance, particularly among the youth.
The President's Office will coordinate activities relating to the
organisation of the exhibition in Croatia, Zuroff told Hina on the
phone.
The Office will co-ordinate the participation of Croatian
institutions in this project, its staging, and additional
activities such as lectures and discussions, as well as the
presentation of documentaries and films on the subject.
The date for the opening of the exhibition in Croatia has not yet
been fixed but I hope the project will be implemented this year,
Zuroff added.
"Courage To Remember" consists of 40 permanent panels and a few
added by the host-country.
The purpose of this project is to keep memory alive and stimulate
tolerance, in particularly among young people, so that anything
similar to the Holocaust will never happen again, the Israeli
said.
He hoped the show would be staged in all major Croatian cities.
Zuroff believes that it will be useful to organise lectures on the
Holocaust at Croatian universities as he has heard and already told
the Croatian media that right-wing students who celebrate the 1941-
1945 Independent State of Croatia (NDH) are nowadays very well
organised in Croatia.
During his stay in Zagreb earlier in January, Zuroff said it had
been an honour for him to met Mesic whose standpoints on the Second
World War and the NDH differed from the former President's.
Zuroff then said President Mesic had supported his idea on the
establishment of a particular department within the Croatian
Justice Ministry, the task of which would be to tackle war crimes
committed in WWII.
To date, 'Courage Too Remember' has been held in a score of
countries on all six continents. For instance, China, Japan and the
former USSR have hosted the display.
In Japan it drew over one million visitors, and it was the first show
on the Holocaust to take place in China and the former Soviet
Union.
In Europe, the exhibition has been staged in Germany, Spain, Norway
and France. Vienna hosted it in 1998 on the occasion of the 50th
anniversary of the "Anschluss".
