DAVOS, Jan 26 (Hina) - Europe cannot go forward if transitional
countries lag behind, Croatian President warned in Davos Friday.
"Europe cannot move forward if the currently dubbed transitional
countries lag behind," Mesic told reporters after a panel
discussion on the subject The Next Transition for Central and
Eastern Europe at which leaders of transitional countries took
place.
In his written address given out to reporters, Mesic stressed it
must not be allowed for transition to become a permanent situation
for the group of countries because in that case this would mean
nothing other than a new name for dependence.
This dependence would be primarily economical, and then political,
Mesic said.
In the alliance of politics and economy Mesic sees important
reasons for Croatia's lagging behind in the transition process in
relation to other similar countries, despite the fact that
Croatia's starting position in 1990 was great.
The present Croatia's basic challenge is to make up for what was
lost, Mesic said in his speech and voiced assessments by economists
that Croatia should put an accent on the restructuring policy with a
focus on privatisation in the real and financial sectors of the
economy.
Furthermore, it is important to create a positive investment
climate and make the administrative and legal systems effective, in
which Croatia is still behind other transitional countries.
All this, of course, must be done simultaneously with strengthening
democracy so market economy could be consolidated in conditions of
a developed, not wild capitalism, Mesic said during a discussion on
transition in Central and Eastern Europe.
