ZAGREB, Jan 26 (Hina) - A decision on how to archive documentation and transcripts of late President Franjo Tudjman is yet to be reached, Croatian President Stipe Mesic said Friday ahead of his leaving to Switzerland's Davos,
confirming speculations that for the President's Office, the issue of Tudjman's transcripts was not yet resolved. Asked if it was correctly assumed that he would not hand over some transcripts and documents to the State Archive, Mesic said: "I have to pass a decision on how to archive the documentation. The law is perfectly clear - the one producing the documents decides on their archiving". Mesic said it was yet to be clarified what should be archived, because some documents must remain at the disposal of the President's Office. "We can't archive Croatia's defence plan. ZAGREB, Jan 26 (Hina) - A decision on how to archive documentation
and transcripts of late President Franjo Tudjman is yet to be
reached, Croatian President Stipe Mesic said Friday ahead of his
leaving to Switzerland's Davos, confirming speculations that for
the President's Office, the issue of Tudjman's transcripts was not
yet resolved.
Asked if it was correctly assumed that he would not hand over some
transcripts and documents to the State Archive, Mesic said: "I have
to pass a decision on how to archive the documentation. The law is
perfectly clear - the one producing the documents decides on their
archiving".
Mesic said it was yet to be clarified what should be archived,
because some documents must remain at the disposal of the
President's Office.
"We can't archive Croatia's defence plan. I think it's quite clear
that I will not go to the Archive if something is needed in
connection with Croatia's defence plan. All this is not quite clear
from the government's decision (on archiving all transcripts and
documents for 30 years) and I think we will manage to clarify this
with the government," Mesic said.
"As far as I am concerned, what has to be prosecuted should be
prosecuted, let (the documentation) lead us to the perpetrator if
there is suspicion of criminal activity, whereas what belongs to
history should be archived," the Croatian President said.
Earlier this week, the President's advisor Igor Dekanic called upon
the media not to speculate that the President's Office had a
different interpretation of the government's decision on the
archiving of Tudjman's transcripts, but to wait until the original
decision was published in the National Gazette.
Vjera Suman, spokeswoman for the President's Office, on Thursday
confirmed the Office received the decision only yesterday, but not
through the government's fault, which forwarded in due time.
