ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - This year, between 600 and 700 flats will be
given to war veterans and their families. For this purpose, 150
million kuna (up to 20 million US dollars) should be earmarked from
the state budget or by 30 million kuna less than in 2000, Croatian
minister in charge of the Homeland Defence War veterans, Ivica
Pancic, told a news conference on Wednesday.
Minister Pancic reiterated that last year, keys to flats were given
to some 640 veterans.
He also reminded that so far the exclusive criterion for providing
the permanent accommodation to war veterans was the status of a
disabled person and the social situation of a potential beneficiary
was not taken in consideration. But, he warned, this must be
changed.
Pancic added that the demand for such flats in big cities was huge
while there were empty flats in smaller towns.
In view of the fact that there were some irregularities in the
construction of flats and that 10 percent of the given apartments
are not used by beneficiaries, control and audit of relevant
decisions will have to be carried out, the minister announced.
