According to the national weather bureau which compared the average
monthly temperatures in 2000 with the 30-year average (a period
from 1961 to 1990), it was extremely warm throughout Croatia last
year.
In 2000, the average temperature was between five (5) degrees
Celsius at the Zavizan peak (Mount Velebit) and 17.9 degrees in
Komiza on the southern island of Vis.
On the precipitation front, 2000 was rather dry.
The average annual amount of precipitation was between 317 mm in the
eastern city of Osijek to 1917 mm on Zavizan.
The areas of Slavonia (eastern Croatia) and the island of Lastovo
were extremely dry. Parts of northwestern and central Croatia and
the coastal city of Split were cited in the category of very dry
regions. Areas of Zagreb, Sisak, Karlovac, Ogulin and south of
Gospic were dry, while only the northern Adriatic coast and
hinterland remained normal.
So far this winter there has been little snow. For instance, the
central towns of Ogulin and Gospic, usually covered by snow
throughout winter, have had only three days with snow to date.
