SPLIT, Jan 6 (Hina) - Port authorities of the Italian Adriatic city
of Ancona has informed their colleagues in Split that one of the
three seamen, who lost their lives in Friday's tragedy when a
Croatian ship overturned 30 miles off Ancona, has been identified.
According to the information. the identified victim is Dusko
Vukovic (aged 26), a steersman from the village of Krilo Jesenice
outside Split. He was identified thanks to documents found with the
corpse, Split port authorities told Hina on Saturday morning.
The other two victims have not yet been identified as no documents
have been found on them, and members of their families will be asked
to help establish their identities.
According to information from Ancona, one found victim is old
between 45 and 50 years and the other between 55 and 65.
For the time being it is known that only one member of the five-
strong crew of the 'Nautika 64' vessel, survived. The 36-year-old
Vukovic, who saved himself by swimming for two hours until he
reached an oil platform, was hospitalised in Ancona yesterday and
returned to Split this morning.
Until 11.00 am Saturday the fifth member was not located. He is
being traced by Italian harbour authority patrol boats,
helicopters and other vessels. The search resumed this morning and
a Croatian salvage ship 'Zadar' joined the Italian rescue team.
It is believed the ship, which sailed out from the Croatian port of
Split with 150 tonnes of marble, capsized due to the shifting of the
cargo on deck, on early Friday morning.
A commission, which has been set up by Croatia's Transport and
Maritime Affairs to establish causes and circumstances of the
tragedy, is being checking all relevant papers and information.
