ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - Media reports that indictments against Croatian generals will be made public on 15 January, cannot be based on information from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), a spokeswoman
for the ICTY Chief Prosecutor told Hina on the phone on Tuesday. During the phone conversation, spokeswoman Florence Hartmann did not want either to confirm or deny reports published on 30 December by a Croatian daily 'Slobodna Dalmacija' which claimed that the Hague-based Tribunal would announce indictments against a few Croatian generals on 15 January, exactly on the ninth anniversary of the international recognition of Croatia's sovereignty. ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - Media reports that indictments against
Croatian generals will be made public on 15 January, cannot be based
on information from the International Criminal Tribunal for the
former Yugoslavia (ICTY), a spokeswoman for the ICTY Chief
Prosecutor told Hina on the phone on Tuesday.
During the phone conversation, spokeswoman Florence Hartmann did
not want either to confirm or deny reports published on 30 December
by a Croatian daily 'Slobodna Dalmacija' which claimed that the
Hague-based Tribunal would announce indictments against a few
Croatian generals on 15 January, exactly on the ninth anniversary
of the international recognition of Croatia's sovereignty.
"This cannot be founded on serious sources," Hartmann stressed.
The Tribunal never gives information in advance on persons against
whom indictments will be issued, she reminded.
Hartmann, however, added that new indictments will be issued in
coming months, perhaps even in January.
"I cannot say precisely to whom investigations will refer," the
spokeswoman said.
She reiterated that Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte would soon
visit Zagreb. She can be expected in the Croatian capital in the end
of this week or at the beginning of the next week, according to her
spokeswoman.
Hartmann said the ICTY would resume usual interrogations for
processes under way on Monday, January 8, and three day before (on
Friday) Tribunal officials would hold a news conference to inform
the public of the court's activities in the coming period.
