HIGH REPRESENTATIVE WILL PROBABLY PASS LAW ON BOSNIAN CITIZENSHIP

MOSTAR, Dec 24 (Hina) - The international High Representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Paddy Ashdown, will probably declare a law on Bosnian citizenship if the state parliament's House of Representatives requests so. #L# The lower house on Monday adopted a law including the option of dual citizenship for the next ten years, which is especially important for numerous Bosnian Croats who exercise this right in Croatia. For the law to come into force, it has to be adopted by the House of Peoples as well, which has not yet been established in line with the results of October elections. Since the House of Peoples will most probably not be constituted, the High Representative will consider the (citizenship) issue immediately, if the House of Representatives requests him to do so, a spokesman for the Office of the High Representative in Sarajevo, Kevin Sullivan, said on Tuesday. He applauded the passing of the citizenship law, describing deputies in the lower house as pragmatic, placing citizens' interests above those of their parties, for which he said they should be congratulated. Sullivan said Ashdown believed that Bosnia should aspire towards more liberal legal standards on dual citizenship. The new law on citizenship goes into force on January 1. (hina) lml
