The HDZ has not changed its stance. The government has accepted the
HDZ's key condition that it forward into parliamentary procedure a
law which would regulate the status of Croatian soldiers sent to
peace missions, said Sanader.
He said that media speculation about him accepting the decision
after being convinced by the United States Embassy in Zagreb was
incorrect. He, however, did not deny that he had communicated with
American diplomats.
At last week's parliamentary discussion, HDZ MPs opposed the
sending of 44c military police officers to Afghanistan because
their rights, especially those regarding the special length of
service and status as military invalid of war in case of wounding,
were not guaranteed by law.
After the parliament committed the government to draw up such a law,
the HDZ supported the sending of the soldiers.
