SARAJEVO, Dec 12 (Hina) - The wife of Bosnian Serb war-time leader
Radovan Karadzic, Ljiljana Zelen-Karadzic, on Thursday resigned
from the post of president of the Red Cross of Republika Srpska
(RS), which she held for the past ten years. #L#
Karadzic's wife said her decision was the result of pressure by the
International Committee of the Red Cross, which made the
continuation of funding for the RS Red Cross conditional on her
resignation.
The fact that the wife of one of the most wanted men for war crimes
held such a position was the subject of sharp criticism by Bosnian
and international humanitarian organisations active in that
country.
Zelen-Karadzic was also a strong opponent to efforts to re-unite
the separate Red Cross organisations in Bosnia's Croat-Muslim
federation and RS and having them act jointly regardless of ethnic
boundaries.
